Chapter 9
The return of the Belarian king could be overshadowed by only one thing: the resurrection of his missing daughter.
Evie had no idea how the news had spread so quickly. There had been no scouts, every member of Atticusâ hunting party had escorted them all the way back to the city gates. But by the time they arrived at the capital, it seemed as though the entire kingdom was waiting for them.
The second she stepped onto the cobbled streets a deafening chorus of applause rose up to greet her, echoing louder from every direction and stealing the breath straight out of her chest.
She startled reflexively, clinging to her father for balance. Both vampires discreetly flinched at the same time, raising a hand to their over-sensitized ears.
âIs this for you?â she gasped, eyes widening in astonishment as what looked like every citizen of Belaria poured onto the streets. âDid they come here for you?â
Dylan shook his head with a little smile. âListen to what theyâre saying.â
PRINCESS! PRINCESS! PRINCESS!
The chant thundered from the very heart of the city, blending into a single wall of sound. As they proceeded down the street she heard it from a thousand screaming voices, from a thousand beaming facesâeach one rejoicing in wild celebration as their missing princess returned home.
Windows were thrown open, flags and banners waved frantically in the air. A pack of children raced in front of them, shrieking with laughter while a shower of ivory petals rained down upon the streets. More people fell into step behind them, lifting their voices in jubilant cries. By the time they reached the palace, the sound had swelled to such deafening heights the princess was no longer able to hear. Her ears were throbbing and a stream of blinding tears poured from her eyes.
She paused at the top of the steps, turning around to face them. Never would she forget the sight of it. Never could she have imagined such an overwhelming display of love.
Her body trembled under the weight of it. That rhythmic chant rose up through the marble, tickling the bottoms of her feet. She wanted to say something, but couldnât find the breath.
In the end, she simply lifted her hand.
The crowds erupted in response, soaring to new levels as the palace doors opened and they were beckoned inside. She stood there a moment longer, still waving, tears streaming freely down her cheeks. Then the world spun dizzily and she reached for her father.
He caught her just as both legs gave out, carrying her inside.
